Learn About the City of Edmonds
Prior to the 19th century, the Edmonds area was inhabited by the Suquamish tribe and European settlement began in 1876 when George Brackett established a community there in 1876 on land he bought from a previous settler. When the Great Northern Railway arrived in 1890 Edmonds was incorporated as a city. Facing Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains to the west, Edmonds is a scenic and lively city with Seattle only 15 miles away. Part of the Seattle metropolitan area, it maintains a small-town feel but has arts venues, great restaurants and spirited downtown with events and annual festivals.
Property Market Overview of Edmonds
The hills surrounding Edmonds were developed into suburban bedroom communities in the mid-to-late 20th century and subsequently annexed into the city. The city is connected to nearby areas by two state highways and the state ferry system while also having excellent public transit service. Since Edmonds was a well-established town by the turn of the century, there are beautifully preserved historic buildings in it. The location along the west-facing slopes of Puget Sound provides beautiful views of the water and the Olympic Mountains while the downtown area is pedestrian friendly and encourages walking. The high standards of living and a viable economic base make it an attractive place to live with a competitive property market. The average listing price increased modestly by roughly 4% but during the same period, inventory declined by 18%.
